Updated Faculty Evaluation Forms

Posted: Mar 17th, 2009 •• Category: Evaluation, ModCore (CMS)

The College of Medicine (COM) has used the same ten question faculty evaluation form (shown at right) for more than eleven years. These questions were originally mandated by the Board of Regents (BOR). As a consequence we refer to them as B1-B10. The BOR no longer exists, but we are still required to provide this data to the main campus. Questions B1-B7 and B10 (renumbered #8) appear on the Academic Affairs public website. Of these, Question B10 (Overall Assessment of Instructor) has the most consistency and validity over time.

There are several problems with this mandated approach, but I will focus on only two here: 1) Undergraduate faculty evaluations tend to be course/section evaluations. The laudable goal is to provide students with the information necessary to “comparison shop” for better sections and instructors. However, this model does not work well with professional degree programs such as Medicine, where there is only one section of each course, taught by several (and sometimes dozens) of instructors. 2) COM faculty play distinctly different roles within each course. These roles cannot be effectively evaluated with a one-size-fits-all form.

The forms shown below address many of these shortcomings while working within the mandatory reporting requirement. Their design reflects two basic principals: put the most important questions near the top and withhold questions that are clearly not relevant to the role being evaluated.

General Faculty Evaluation Form

This is the generic form shown above, reconstituted to make it clearer and easier to use.

Question B10 Overall Assessment) appears at the top, followed by an area for written comments.

The remaining BOR questions appear below the comments.

Small Group Leader Evaluation Form

This is a variation on the general form shown above. There is an additional required question concerning feedback.

We withheld questions B1 (Course Objectives) and B4 (Availability Outside Class) because they are not relevant in this context.

Clinical Faculty Evaluation

For clinical instructors “at the bedside” the COM adds three questions (C1-C3) to the ever-present B10.

We withheld questions B1 (Course Objectives), B3 (Expectations), and B4 (Availability Outside Class) because they are not relevant or redundant.

May 20, 2009 Update: Due to campus rules, the questions discussed above have been added back.

Lecture Evaluation

Rounding out the role-based forms is one for individual lectures. It consists of only one question (B10) followed by an area for written comments.

Our intention is to provide a version that is optimized for “smart” phones to facilitate real-time feedback from students as lectures are given. They can also use their laptops when they have them in class.
