Classification and Coding of Courses
With the growing number of interconnected systems there is a need for a single consistent way to refer to a specific class.
We have designed a four part nomenclature that includes the campus
course number (when available), an extension for electives, the academic year,
and the period/rotation (when applicable).
All have the form…
<campus course number>.<com extension>.<year>.<rotation/period>
The second and fourth positions will frequently be zero (0).
Examples…
bms6190.0.0809.0
Anatomy by Diagnostic Imaging 0809
mel7947.20.0809.3a
Ethical Issues in Family Medicine 0809 1st two weeks of third period (aka 3a)
[This course is currently known as CM E 20.]
bcc7170.0.0809.ghi Family Medicine/Ambulatory Care Clerkship 0809 rotation group GHI
[Group GHI defines a unique time slot.]
The beauty of this system is that it incorporates terminology/coding
already in use, while making it possible to express, filter and sort
courses in a consistent way. <smile> For example…
bcc7170.0 same course in any year
bcc7170.0.0809 specific course/year
bcc7170.0.0809.ghi specific course/year/rotation
It is also completely compatible/compliant with the UF/state-wide organization of courses.
For those interested in GME (resident) courses/rotations there is an unrelated classification scheme that we will incorporate at a future date.
