Competency Evaluations in ModCore

Posted: Aug 5th, 2009 •• Category: Core Services, Evaluation, ModCore (CMS)

Many clerkship directors are already using a feature of our legacy system called “roll-up”. These evaluations are done in two steps, with initial input from clerkship faculty followed by a summative evaluation completed by the course director. The data from the first step are rolled up and summarized on the summative form. This information is then shared with the student being evaluated and the Office of Student Affairs to inform the “Dean’s Letter” and other assessments.

ModCore takes the best parts of this two step approach and makes it more flexible and effective. Each course/clerkship director first chooses the major and sub-competencies to be evaluated.

Major competencies only appear on the summative form. The sub-competencies appear on the at-large evaluator form. Each sub-competency implies its parent major competency. If no sub-competencies are selected there is no evaluator form. Clerkships will generally use all six, but basic science courses may choose fewer. Each major competency selected creates a column in the course/clerkship gradebook.

These columns are have weight of zero by default, but may be weighted and contribute numerically to the overall grade. The course director has the option to modify the scoring rubrics used on the sub-competency forms seen by the faculty evaluators.

Regardless of weight, the score for each selected major competency appears with the student’s overall score summary (see example right).

If sub-competencies are used, the narrative text from the scoring rubric is presented to the student as a comment below the numeric scores (see example below).

This gives the student an enhanced mix of quantitative and qualitative feedback on their performance.
